During the Chinese New Year, a film titled “Hot and Spicy” was released in mainland China. It was directed and starred by the renowned Chinese filmmaker Jia Ling. The movie gained significant attention and frequently trended on social media. The main highlight of the film was Jia Ling’s impressive weight loss journey, where she managed to shed 100 kilograms in one year for her role. In the movie, Jia Ling portrayed Du Leying, a character who struggled with obesity, low self-esteem, unemployment, and failed relationships. However, she made a determined decision to change her life and fought back by learning boxing and embarking on a weight loss journey. Eventually, she succeeded in transforming her life. Jia Ling’s personal commitment to this role served as an inspiration to many, and the film aimed to convey a message of self-love, self-acceptance, and personal transformation.<\/p>\n

Methodology:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

To gauge public sentiment regarding Jia Ling’s weight loss journey, a collection of the top 10 YouTube videos\u2019 comments was gathered using the search term “Jia Ling weight loss.(\u8d3e\u73b2\u51cf\u80a5\uff09”\uff08note:here I used the mandarin for searching because most of the audiences are Chinese.)\u00a0Sentiment analysis was applied to these comments to determine the prevailing emotions expressed by the audience. Subsequently, a word cloud and bar chart were\u00a0generated to visualize the results.<\/p>\n

Results:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

The sentiment analysis of the collected comments revealed a diverse range of opinions among the mainland Chinese audience. Many viewers praised and admired Jia Ling’s determination, considering her weight loss journey as a source of motivation to embark on their own weight loss or personal transformation journeys. They described her as both physically and mentally beautiful, and acknowledged her increased strength. From the wordcloud,we can discover positive evaluations like \u201cbeautiful\u201d, \u201cperseverance\u201d, \u201cgood\u201d are frequently mentioned.<\/p>\n

However, contrasting opinions were also present. Some individuals expressed concerns about the potential health risks associated with such rapid weight loss methods, emphasizing the likelihood of weight regain. Additionally, a few viewers felt that Jia Ling had lost her distinctive characteristics and the charm that she previously possessed, including her approachability and comedic appeal.<\/p>\n

From the bar chart that has been divided into five segments, we can conclude the positive views occupy the mainstream with about 250 pieces of them scored (0.8,1.0]. However, there are also numerous of them that show negative sense, for approximately 200 pieces ((0-0.4]) .(this model uses a different scoring system, 0 represents negative and 1 represents positive, the closer to the Endpoint the stronger the emotion is.)<\/p>\n

Conclusion:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

The sentiment analysis of YouTube video comments indicated a mixed response, with a substantial number of viewers expressing admiration and motivation, while others raised concerns about health and perceived changes in Jia Ling’s persona. It reflects some emotions about body anxiety and individual success. While self improvement and growth is encouraged, whether the methods deployed are kind of extreme need more discussion.<\/p>\n
