The increase of minimum allowable wage of domestic helpers
The Hong Kong government increased FDHs’ Minimum Allowable Wage (MAW) from HK$ 4,870 to HK$ 4,990 per month on 27 September. The new level of MAW has applied to FDH contracts signed on or after 28 September.
According to Labor Department’s official website, the government has permitted FDHs’ importation since the 1970’s to fill local full-time live-in domestic helpers’ shortages. Employers with a monthly salary of not less than HK$15,000 per month are eligible to hire FDHs. FDHs and employers should sign a two-year contract.
