Hong Kong's Demographic Changes
Birth Rate Declines and Death Rate RisesOver the years, Hong Kong has faced challenges related to its changing demographic profile. Factors such as late marriage, changing social norms, and an aging population have influenced birth and death rates.
“Hong Kong’s fertility rate has always been one of the lowest among Asian economies,” said a government spokesman.
From 1981 to 2022, the crude birth rate in Hong Kong has declined from 16.8‰ to 4.4‰. Meanwhile, the crude death rate has risen from 4.8‰ to 8.4‰.
The data on male and female births in Hong Kong from 1981 to 2023 shows that the sex ratio at birth is relatively stable, roughly around 110 males to 100 females. Meanwhile, the number of deaths for both males and females has been on an upward trend since 1985, suggesting an aging population. In 2023, there were 3.32 thousand births and 5.44 thousand deaths. Overall, the fertility rate in Hong Kong remains low.
