Unfortunately, the original negatives were destroyed in a fire in 1993. However, the chairman of the Oscar Committee at that time ensured that all of Ray&#8217;s films were preserved, even the ashes. In 2013, advanced 4K restoration technology made it possible to restore the damaged negatives. The Criterion Collection and L\u2019Immagine Ritrovata in Italy worked tirelessly to repair the burned negatives using special treatments and merging the information onto new negatives. The arduous process involved searching vast archives for replacements for severely damaged parts.
