Xinyu Gu was majored in Media and Communication Studies in her undergraduate studies. She won the academic excellence award for continuously three years. She is chasing for her master’s degree in journalism. She had an internship in The Paper for one year, publishing a feature article about female online car-hailing drivers: their lives and struggles. She also took participatory observations about street vendors, learning more about their communities, negotiations with city management officers and ambitions to be “successful businessmen”. She directed a documentary and wrote feature articles about street vendors, trying to break the stereotypes about this marginalized group in the city. She also worked as an intern editor in Phoenix Yihe Publishing co., ltd, creating and publishing media contents for children’s literature and educations. She also did semi-structured interviews and participatory observations in the field of media representations, aging, etc.

She is especially interested in observing and recording ordinary people’s stories. For example, a street vendor trying to be a dignified businessman, a factory worker as a poet in love, a restaurant owner sticking to his shop after the epidemic and the death of his wife, villagers in western Sichuan, China believing in the religious ceremony that can bless the world peace… She also loves street photography, capturing the real statement of people.
