The conflict between Israel and Hamas has raged on for over 15 months, but now a ceasefire is in place. The agreement seeks to bring a permanent end to the fighting, with Hamas releasing hostages in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

However, the damage inflicted by the conflict is a lasting and painful legacy. Satellite images of the Gaza-Israel border now show only smoke, collapsed buildings, and a sense of despair, rather than the vibrant atmosphere that once existed.

Rebuilding Gaza is a monumental challenge. Halfway through the conflict, the UN projected that reconstruction costs could reach $40 billion (£33 billion). This effort is expected to take many years, if not decades, to complete.

The human cost of the conflict will be felt for years to come, with tens of thousands of people left wounded and with complex psychological scars.
