A century-old photograph reveals the once-grand entrance of Lingyin Temple, a solemn gateway that has since been replaced by a ticket booth and tourist checkpoint. Few visitors realize that the gate standing today is not the one that once welcomed monks and pilgrims. Destroyed in 1860 during the Taiping Rebellion, the original structure was later rebuilt—only to vanish again into history. Now, all that remains are faded photographs and whispers of the past. But if you pause and listen, perhaps you can still hear its echoes in the wind.
