Hong Kong, as a highly developed metropolis, has drawn widespread attention to its demographic structure. From 1961 to 2024, the city has witnessed a gradual increase in the population aged 35 and above, while conversely experiencing a steady decline in the proportion of residents under 35. This demographic shift clearly indicates two concurrent trends: a persistent decrease in annual birth rates and a rapidly aging population. The sustained growth of elderly residents versus the diminishing younger population underscores the severity of Hong Kong’s aging crisis, presenting significant challenges to social welfare systems and long-term urban development strategies.
