Chinese Fortune-Telling

History, Methods and Significance
Fortune-telling has a long history in China, rooted in ancient divination and early religious practices. While some forms have faded, many remain popular today—especially among younger generations, much like horoscopes and tarot.

Chinese fortune-telling, or suan ming, has many variations, most of which stem from the I Ching (Book of Changes), a foundational text influenced by Taoism and Confucianism. Over centuries, it evolved into systems like the Five Elements and the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches.

One of the most iconic places to experience this tradition is Wong Tai Sin Temple in Hong Kong. Dedicated to a Taoist deity said to grant every wish, the temple draws thousands daily to pray, burn incense, and use the “kau cim” ritual—shaking bamboo sticks to receive a fortune slip.
