My name is Yan Xinyao, I come from Jiangxi Province, mainland China. I’m studying the University of Hong Kong, as a master of journalism. I graduated from the Communication University of Zhejiang this year in June, and my major was bilingual broadcasting. During my undergraduate studies, I took several practical courses, such as Broadcasting Skills, Anchoring Skills, and Editing Skills. Also, I learned something about journalism, such as News Writing and News Gathering. At the same time, I had courses about basic theories of communication, new media, and sociology, which are the foundations of communication.
In addition to the courses, I also had some practical experience. I worked as the editor-in-chief of the school’s media center for 2 years and wrote more than 50 articles for the school’s media, most of them were character interviews. Besides, I had my internship at Hangzhou TV, the programme I worked on called Hangzhou Eye, which tells the story of Hangzhou City through short documentaries of about 15 minutes. I experience the whole process of planning, interviewing, hosting, dubbing, and editing during the internship.
During those practical experiences, I found myself interested in interviewing, writing, and producing. Although I’ve already learned some basic skills and theories of journalism in my undergraduate studies, I think it is not specific enough. The course didn’t have in-depth learning, and I didn’t get a lot of chances to practice. Therefore, I decided to have further study in journalism.
