Salt Making

Inheritance and Conservation of Yim Tin Tze

Yim Tin Tze, an island located in Sai Kung, which has the only remaining natural salt pans in Hong Kong and a history of more than 300 years. It is surrounded by the sea and has beautiful scenery. The villagers on the island used to make a living by baking and producing salt. Unlike industrial salt making, Yim Tin Tze has the most traditional salt-making process, which draws seawater into the salt field, increases the concentration of seawater under the scorching sun, and finally the salt is naturally dried.

Now, the villagers have returned there to preserve history and culture by carrying on the vanishing traditional salt-making process. As a result, Yim Tin Tze has become a tourist village with many tourists coming every day.
