She became the Director of the JMSC on 1 July 2024, after taking the role as Interim Director for a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As a filmmaker and teacher, Ruby has inspired students from Hong Kong and beyond, elevating the art of storytelling both in journalism and filmmaking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ruby founded the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hkdocumentary.org\/\">Hong Kong Documentary Initiative<\/a>\u00a0in 2015. She leads the HKDI as project director, dedicating herself to nurturing the next generation of local documentary filmmakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ruby was born in Hong Kong and has spent the past 35 years of her career working in the United States, Beijing, and Hong Kong. Her documentary\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0859595\/\"><i><span>The Blood of Yingzhou District<\/span><\/i><\/a><span>\u00a0won an Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She received multiple Academy Award and Emmy nominations, as well as numerous international awards, such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dupont.org\/\">Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Journalism Award<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sermpanya.org\/hongkong\">FilmAid Asia\u2019s Humanitarian Award<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundsforngos.org\/latest-funds-for-ngos\/award-for-covering-global-health-issues\/\">Global Health Council Media Award<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ruby Yang joined the Journalism and Media Studies Centre in 2013 as the\u00a0Hung Leung Hau Ling Distinguished Fellow\u00a0in Humanities.
