Yim Tin Tsai is an island located in the Sai Kung Sea in the New Territories of Hong Kong. In the past, villagers on the island built salt pans to make a living by drying salt, hence the name. However, times have changed, the salt industry has declined, villagers have moved away, and the island has become desolate. Fortunately, the community revitalization movement that began in 2000 has preserved many of the island’s moving stories and culture. The restoration of the salt pans not only won an award from UNESCO, but also made the island the only remaining salt production site in Hong Kong.
