Vivian is a current JMSC student at Hong Kong University and an education specialist of International education. Having spent formative years in the United States since the age of fourteen before moving back and becoming a journalist in Hong Kong, she earned her Bachelor’s degree from Bard College and first Master’s degree from the University of Chicago both in the field of English Literature. However, it was during her experiences as an educator that she encountered the challenge of fostering critical thinking in an era increasingly dominated by fast-paced, often superficial media consumption. This realization ignited her desire to transition from academia to journalism, where she saw an opportunity to rekindle public engagement with critical analysis and thoughtful discourse. To Vivian, journalism represents a field where the skills she has honed—critical thinking, narrative construction, and multicultural engagement—can be put to meaningful use. Her diverse professional background, which includes roles as an academic instructor, writing consultant, and English editor, has equipped her with a broad set of skills that are highly relevant to journalism. Despite her extensive background in literature and education, she is eager to learn and adapt, driven by a clear vision of what she hopes to achieve in the field of Journalism. Her ultimate goal is to transition into a career within a non-profit international organization, where she can leverage her skills in writing and capacity development to address issues such as climate change, wild animal protection, and the rights of marginalized communities, including indigenous people.
