Kuk Po, the Home they Long For
Hopes and dreams for a vanishing Hakka Village

By Chun-Chieh Wang

In the northeast corner of Hong Kong, close to the mainland China border, there is an abandoned Hakka village, Kuk Po. Although the villagers of Kuk Po have long since moved to the city and even emigrated overseas, they still return to the village every year to gather with their relatives. After the Hong Kong government released its countryside conservation plan, Kuk Po quickly attracted attention. Many NGOs, including teams from Hong Kong universities, entered the village to explore possible cultural development. The villagers also wanted to take the opportunity to rebuild their homes and even considered returning to live there. But unfortunately, their expectations were far from the government’s plan.
