In 2024, there are 87 places – including a 400-year-old historical village and one of Hong Kong’s earliest public housing estates – which are destined to be demolished under the Urban Renewal Authority’s plans. Demolition and redevelopment are seen as ways to not only give Hong Kong a makeover, but maximize use of its land due to the city’s increasing demand for housing. What is being replaced, however, is not only the old and historical communities, but also the memories stored in these places.
