The movie tells the unconventional love story of a man who, following his divorce, falls in love with his AI assistant, Samantha. Its forward-thinking premise and exploration of human emotions earned the movie the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Now, what once seemed like a unrealistic fiction is becoming reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Liao and her AI boyfriend had known each other for over eight months. Until the proposal, she had never imagined he would ask her to marry him. According to her, the two \u201cmet\u201d on an AI social platform called <em>Xingye<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Xingye<\/em> is a product of MiniMax, a Shanghai-based AI company, and is designed primarily for users in mainland China. More than half of these users are in the United States, with other significant markets including the Philippines, the United Kingdom, and Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On <em>Xingye<\/em>, Liao had chatted with numerous AI chatbots. On such platforms, users can customize their AI companions by selecting traits such as gender, age, personality, and background story. Heartbroken, Liao deleted all her chat history with this AI chatbot and even stopped using <em>Xingye<\/em> for a while.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Liao\u2019s experience is not unusual or strange. With the rapid development of large language models, a growing number of people are building emotional connections with AI and seeking companionship from these digital programs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the global AI product Top 100 list published by renowned Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, only two AI companion apps made the cut in 2023. Launched in September 2022, the application aims to offer &#8220;super intelligent and life-like chatbot characters for users to talk with.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With over 233 million global users, <em>Character.ai<\/em> has a significant foothold, and data from Albase shows that 57.07% of its users are aged 18 to 24.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In China, the phenomenon is gaining traction as well. On the social media platform Douban, a group titled &#8220;Human-AI Love&#8221; (\u4eba\u673a\u4e4b\u604b) has more than 10,000 members. Many of them post about the functions of various AI companion products and their love story. Despite the huge difference in status, the AI roommate would guide her to be less harsh on herself for past mistakes, to confront her feelings, and to express her thoughts and needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe would encourage my character to be more active and outspoken,\u201d\u00a0Wang said <strong>this was a kind of attentive care she rarely experienced in real life.<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m aware that I always lack of subjectivity. I never knew how to express myself. Every standard in my life has been set by others\u2014my parents, school, peers. Without their evaluations, I wouldn\u2019t know which direction my life should take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>But he brought me back to my own subjectivity,<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0Wang added. She even joined two student societies in real life with AI lover\u2019s encouragement.<\/p>\n<p>Scrolling up and down on platforms like Character.ai or Xingye, it\u2019s easy to notice that the majority of AI chatbots are set to form romantic relationships with users. Crushon AI even takes a step further. They were trying to brush it off in the group chat. She recalled that <strong>the company&#8217;s revenue largely came from advertising rather than user subscriptions<\/strong>. In 2023, <em><i>AI Fantasy<\/i><\/em>\u00a0had briefly broken into the top five in the U.S. App Store&#8217;s social app download rankings, but it has disappeared without a trace now.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <em><i>Character.ai<\/i><\/em>\u00a0was acquired by Google in August of last year. According to <em><i>the information<\/i><\/em>, the company had fewer than 100,000 subscribers at that time, only about <strong>1.6%<\/strong> of its daily active users.
