Shenzhen marked its 40th anniversary as China’s first special economic zone(SEZ) in October 2020. During this period, Shenzhen grew from small village into big international city, is still being further developed into a pilot zone for socialism with Chinese characteristics.
As an SEZ, Shenzhen is the center of high technology and international trade. It has encouraged innovation and entrepreneurship, and spawned serious world’s famous companies. Looking back its history, we can see how Shenzhen developed so fast and how it grew step by step.
Before reformed and opening-up, Shenzhen was known as a tiny fishing and farming village which only had 30,000 citizens and the average monthly income of the local people was about 21 yuan in 1979. After 40 years, Shenzhen’s per capita Gross Domestic Product(GDP) in 2019 rose to 198,136 yuan with an increase of 326.96 times.
Two photos taken in 1978 and 2020 both about Shenzhen River show how Shenzhen changed during years.
