This is a comparison of Manhattan skyline before and after the 911 terrorist attacks. In the first photo from AP, the Petronas Twin Towers stand high in the night sky of New York, marking the golden age of the United States. Only a year later, after a series of terrorist attacks by al-Qaeda, the twin towers collapsed, leaving only the fire and smoke that had been burning for three months, as we see in the second photo from a NYT photographer.
