Michelle was born and raised in Nanjing, China and immigrated to Melbourne, Australia at the age of 12. She lived in Melbourne for about 10 years, completing her secondary and tertiary education there. After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne, she moved to Hong Kong and worked for Morgan Stanley for over four years, running initial public offerings and mergers/acquisitions for clients in the consumer, retail and healthcare sectors in Asia. She then moved on to work for CPP Investments, which is one of the largest pension fund investment managers in the world.

Michelle has always had a strong interest in journalism because she believes journalism is profoundly impactful. For one thing, it brings to light things that should be known and allows people to access information on an equal basis, and for another, it invokes deeper thinking from the audience and possibly invites for debate (although this can be both positive and negative!). Michelle was not able to study journalism as an undergraduate, but hopes to equip herself with the necessary skills of a journalist through this master program and potentially pursue a career in journalism at a later stage.
